Whatever we are about to face for the coming day, week, month, or year takes strength to overcome. It takes strength to get up in bed and get to work, even if you still want to sleep. It also takes strength to get up and go to school, despite the challenges a student faces in his studies. Especially if a person is facing hard times, it takes strength to persevere. However, our strength should not be ours but the strength of God.

Father in heaven, as I wake up today, give me the grace and strength I need to face another day. Thank You because in times of difficulties, You are my strength. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why do we have to pray for grace and strength?

Praying for strength is just as good as praying for grace. Most of the time, we pray for strength whenever we face something that we cannot handle with our strength. Indeed, our response should not be to face it alone and rely on our strength but to seek God and ask Him for it. 

If we were strong enough to tackle any difficulties in life, then we wouldn’t have any hard times in our lives. However, we know that is not the case. We will always encounter challenges, trials, and difficulties that we can’t handle alone. That is why Ephesians 6:10 teaches us that we must be strong in the LORD and the strength of His might.

Praying for strength also means praying for grace, as it is only by God’s grace that we can have the strength to pull through whatever difficulties we face. Before we were in Christ, we didn’t deserve any favor from God, let alone His help in giving us the strength we need. However, in Christ, we are adopted as God’s children. The dividing wall of hostility has been torn down, and Christ has restored peace between God and man. Because of that, we can ask for and receive strength from God, His grace through Christ, and only through Christ alone.

In Hebrews 4:15-16, it is written that with Christ as our High Priest, we can confidently come before God’s throne of grace and ask Him for grace and mercy in times of need. In other words, if you are in Christ, you can come before God’s throne of grace and ask him for the grace and strength you require.

We pray and ask God for grace and strength because the Bible says that we should seek God for it. In Isaiah 40:29 (He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.), it is written that God gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might. It is important to note that God not only gives us the grace to be strong, but He is also our strength. God is both the giver and the vessel of our actual strength. As written in Psalm 28:7, the LORD is our strength and shield whom our heart should trust.

We need grace, as we can only be strong through God’s grace in Christ. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, it is written that the grace we receive in Christ is sufficient for us whenever we encounter hardships. Whenever we are weak, God’s power is made perfect. With grace in Christ, we are strong whenever we are weak.

That is precisely why the apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the church in Philippi that (despite house arrest) he could do all things through Christ, who strengthens him. He could still preach Christ, minister to others, do the will of God, and live a victorious and dynamic life through Christ, who strengthened him and gave him enabling grace, wherein God’s power was made perfect in his weakness.

Heavenly Father, I thank You because I have access to Your throne of grace in Christ, where I can ask for grace in times of need. Thank You because I receive sufficient grace in Christ, and Your power is perfect in my weakness. Always remind me that I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
