If we were to describe grace, it is something that we never deserved yet is still given to us. One example of the most extraordinary grace we have received from God is His Son, Jesus Christ. In Romans 5:8 (But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8), it is written that even while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Because of Christ, we have received forgiveness, eternal life, and adoption into God’s family, something that we who were sinners never deserved. That is truly amazing grace right there.
Father in heaven, I thank You for the amazing grace displayed in your ultimate act of love, Your Son dying for us on the cross. Right now, I am in my Christian walk because of the cross. You never had to send Your Son, but You did because You are gracious and merciful. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Why do we need grace?
As mentioned above, grace is something we never deserved, yet is still given to us. We were all sinners before we surrendered our lives to Christ. We are righteous in the eyes of God only because of Christ’s imputed righteousness to those who believe in Him. In other words, we were God’s enemies because we were sinners. The Bible clearly shows that God hates evil and evil-doers, as written in Psalm 11:5 (The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.) and Psalm 5:4-5. This is because God is a holy God, and evil cannot dwell with Him.

Knowing that we are sinners who do evil when we sin, it is clear that we don’t deserve anything from God. We could not ask God for strength, wisdom, favor, healing, or so many other things that we need because we were God’s enemies in the first place.
However, everything changes if one repents and believes in the finished work of Christ. Because of Christ, the dividing wall of hostility between God and man has been broken down, and He has reconciled us with the Father, as written in Ephesians 2:14-16. That is also why, in Romans 5:1-5, it is written that we can have peace with God through our faith in Jesus Christ.
It is also written in Romans 5:1-5 that in Christ, we have access to one of the most incredible sources of grace that we could ever receive, being justified in the eyes of God. Because of that, God looks at us the same way He looks at Christ. That is why we can rejoice, no matter what sufferings or challenges we encounter, because now that we are in Christ, we can ask God for the grace that we need, including strength, endurance, wisdom, and patience.
With all of that said, what makes a good prayer of grace? A good prayer of grace is when a person asks God for something in times of need, knowing that it is only through Christ that he or she can ask God for it. Whatever it is that we need, it is only by God’s grace through Christ that we will receive it. A prayer of grace is one asked from a position of humility and gratitude, in line with what Christ has done for us on the cross.
Father in heaven, I thank You because in Christ, I can have the grace I need in every aspect of my life. Remind me never to face things in life by my strength alone but to rely on Your grace, which is more than sufficient for me. Thank You because even though I have weakness, I am made strong because of Your power and grace. I can only experience such things because Christ died for me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do you pray a prayer of grace?
We need grace for every aspect of our lives. It is accurate to say that everything we pray or ask God for relies on grace. Whether that is financial provision, healing, strength to push through difficulties in life, wisdom for an exam, or favor for a job application, regardless of what aspect of life it is, it is thanks to grace because apart from Christ, we don’t deserve anything.
So how do we say a prayer of grace? In Hebrews 4:15-16, it is written that because Christ is our High Priest, we can come in confidence before His throne of grace to ask Him for grace and mercy in times of need. In other words, we can pray for grace by coming before God and asking Him what we need. Is it grace to help you forgive those who have hurt you? Grace to help you persevere through life’s challenges? Grace to have financial provision for your family? Whatever it is, go before God’s throne of grace and ask Him for the grace you need.
This means that there are wholly different kinds of prayers of grace that you can pray, depending on which aspect of life you are asking God’s grace for. Also, the prayers that you pray do not have to be long. A simple, short, and straight-to-the-point prayer will do.
You can pray for the everyday grace that you need as you go to work, deal with challenges at work, and be excellent in it, despite the other problems that have been bothering you.
Heavenly Father, give me the grace to get through this day, just as you enabled me to get through yesterday. Help me be excellent in my work today, and give me the wisdom I need to solve whatever problems I encounter. Give me the strength I need to face the day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Even when it comes to ministry, it is still grace that allows you to be able to minister well. It is not about your strength and skill. It is about God’s grace that you receive in Christ, which is sufficient for you and makes you strong. Even your existing skills and strengths are a byproduct of God’s grace and mercy. The reason non-believers can get by is because of God’s common grace for them, just as God allows the sun to shine on both the wicked and the just.
Father in heaven, remind me that in Christ, Your grace is sufficient for me and that it is in my weaknesses that Your power is made perfect. Whenever I am weak, I am also made strong because of Your grace. Help me and give me the grace I need as I preach the Gospel and minister to the lost. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Morning prayers of grace
Note that there are some prayers where you don’t ask for anything but rather remind yourself of the grace you already have in Christ. One example is above, where we acknowledge that we already have the grace sufficient for us in Christ and that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. It is something that we have to remind ourselves of rather than ask for because we already have it in Christ.
Another example is the grace to live a holy life. On our own, we can never live a holy life. It takes grace for us to continually pursue holiness and righteousness. That is why believers can say no to sin, as they are freed from it and have access, through Christ, to the grace that enables them to live a holy life. It is a good prayer to say whenever we encounter temptations.
Father in heaven, I find my classmate very annoying, and I am tempted to release my anger toward him. Give me the grace to be patient and to respond in a more Christlike manner. On my own, it is hard, but by the spirit and with Your grace, I know that I can. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Morning prayers of grace
Living a Christian life is impossible if we don’t have the grace of God. It is only by the grace of God that we are sanctified, strengthened, and provided for. That is why, even if we already have everything in Christ, we must still approach God in humility and dependence upon Him, as everything that we receive and helps us is gained through God’s grace and mercy.
