A Morning Prayer for Church Service

1 Timothy 2:1 teaches us that we are to make supplications for all and intercede for them. That includes praying, interceding, and making supplications for the church service/s that your church conducts each Sunday. We should pray not just for the specific church service that we will attend but also for the other services at different times of the day that your church conducts.

Heavenly Father, You are the God who watches over us. I pray not just for the morning service that I will attend but also for our church’s afternoon service. I pray that everything will go well and that no significant problems will arise. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do you pray before a church service?

Praying in the morning for your church service is an ideal time to pray, as it is the start of your day. You can pray in the morning for the upcoming church service by first identifying and knowing the essential aspects of the church service you need to pray for. 

Some examples of these important aspects and things to pray for in your church service are the preacher, the volunteers, the worship team, and the congregation. Depending on your context, there might be more or less elements to pray over. However, the fundamental principle here is to know the critical aspects of your church service.

Once you have identified them, that is where you can start to pray. For example, one of the critical elements of your church service is the preacher or pastor. Therefore pray for your church service preacher or sermon to be Christ-centered, Christ-exalting, and biblical preaching that is dogmatically sound. Titus 2:1 (But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:) commands us, especially ministers, to teach according to sound doctrine.

For the congregation, this could mean praying that God will soften their hearts as they listen to the sermon. You can also pray that the Holy Spirit shall convict them, as written in John 16:8. It could be a prayer for grace and strength for the volunteers and no technical difficulties for the worship team and that things will go well in the end, just as 1 John 3:2 tells us to pray for things to go well. The point here is to identify the essential elements of your church service. The sermon, preacher/pastor, congregation, corporate worship, and volunteers are just some of them, and there could be more.

Below is an example of how to pray in the morning for your church service:

Heavenly Father, You are the God who gives grace. I pray for Your grace and mercy upon our pastor, specifically that You will give him boldness as he preaches your Word. I pray that we will have a Christ-glorifying sermon that stays true to Your Word. As our pastor preaches Your Word, I pray that You will also work in the hearts of the congregation listening to it. May we have a smooth church service with no technical difficulties and give our volunteers the wisdom they need to serve with excellence. I pray that we will worship You with our hearts and minds today. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What is the purpose of pre-service prayer?

One reason why we pray before our church service is because whatever concerns we have regarding it, we should pray about them to God. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us that we should not be anxious to present our requests to God. What are your concerns regarding your church service? What is the possibility of some equipment malfunctioning? Or that people are late because of the weather? Whatever those concerns are, we can lift them before God.

Another reason is that we are fighting against spiritual enemies. In Ephesians 6:12, it is written by Paul that we don’t just wrestle against flesh and blood but also against spiritual forces of darkness. These dark forces will try to sabotage the advancement of God’s kingdom and matters concerning believers. They will try to do anything to hinder believers. That is why they are our enemies. One of the ways we counter their work is by praying. Our prayers are powerful and work well, as written in James 5:16 (Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.). Therefore, whatever concerns we have where the enemies might attack, we can pray for them.

These prayers outlined above can also be applied when you pray for the other services of your church. They are still very applicable, not just to the church service you are going to attend. Just as we pray to God before we go to work, take an exam, or attend a big meeting, we should also pray for our church services before we attend them, along with the other church services your church conducts throughout each Sunday.
