Morning Prayer For Comfort When Someone Dies

As Christians, being there for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who have lost a loved one is essential. In John 13:34-35, Jesus commands us to love one another because the way we treat and love each other as His followers is how the world knows that we are His disciples. One way that we love other believers is by carrying burdens with them and being with them in times of grief.

Father in heaven, I pray for (name of the person) that You will comfort him in this season of grief. Remind him that he is not going through this alone. What does God say about the death of a loved one?

There is no better place to look and know what God says or who God is when a person loses a loved one than the Bible. The Bible shows us that God is compassionate towards those who have lost a loved one. (Jesus wept. John 11:35), probably the shortest verse in the Bible, shows us that Jesus wept with Martha and Mary when Lazarus died. Also, (For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15) teaches us that Jesus is our high priest, who can sympathize with our weakness. We can never say to Jesus that He does not understand what we are going through because He clothed Himself in flesh and blood and lived like a human, just as we do. He also experienced grief and pain when He lost His father, Joseph. That is why, in everything, Jesus does not only understand us, He feels what we are feeling. He went through those things too.

These powerful truths should instill comfort and confidence whenever we encourage someone and pray for comfort in the morning for our fellow believers who have lost a loved one.

Lord Jesus, I thank You for being a compassionate God. You understand what (name of the person) is going through. You also have gone through it Yourself. Remind (name of the person) that in this season of grieving, You are looking at him with compassion, gentleness, and love. In Your name, I pray. Amen.

What are some good Psalms for grief?

The book of Psalms is filled with verses that talk about grief. Most of the time, the Psalms were written because the Psalmist was in great distress, sadness, grieving, or a wide range of other human emotions. Grief is also one of the things that are written about in the Psalms. 

With that in mind, you can pray in the morning for comfort for someone who lost a loved one by praying the verses themselves.

Psalm 30:5 talks about weeping. It says that we may weep now, but rejoicing comes in the morning. It is a verse that brings comfort since we know that pain will not last forever. We shall move forward, rise, and rejoice again in the LORD.

Father in heaven, I pray for (name of the person) that he shall eventually move forward from the death of his loved one and rejoice again in You. Thank You because You are the very reason why joy comes in the morning, no matter how painful the death of his loved one may be. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

The second example is Psalm 34:18, which tells us that God is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. When grieving, sometimes it is not the encouraging words from others that comfort us. Instead, it is their presence that must sit with us. We can expect the same from God: He is there with us as we grieve. He never leaves us nor forsakes us.

Heavenly Father, You said in your Word that You are always near to the brokenhearted. In that spirit, I shall take comfort as I grieve the death of my loved one. Save and heal my crushed spirit, Father. I thank You because I shall emerge victorious in this. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

The last example is Psalm 73:26. When someone dies, the pain and surprise might be so great that our flesh and heart may fail. However, despite our reality, we can still move forward because God is our strength.

Father in heaven, I pray for (name of the person) that he shall always hold on to You for strength and never rely on his own. As he perseveres and works to move forward, remind him that grief may cause his flesh and heart to fail, but he can still persevere and thrive as a Christian because You are His strength. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What is a good prayer of comfort?

A good prayer for comfort for someone grieving because of someone’s death is something direct and to the point. When you pray for comfort for someone, or yourself, pray directly to God regarding the pain and hurt you feel and the comfort you need. As Jesus has taught us in Matthew 6:7, you don’t have to offer long flowery prayers to make God hear you. 

Also, you can be honest with God if you have lost a loved one. Be honest and cry out to God with whatever pain you feel as you grieve that person’s death. He is there to listen and bind up your wounds.

Philippians 4:13 says that we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us. That means that no matter how painful this grieving season is, we can still obey God, do His will, and live victorious in Christ, who always strengthens us.
