Whether you are a married couple or a couple who is praying for marriage, clarity is an essential thing to pray for. Just as we pray for clarity regarding important matters in life, we also pray the same about marriage because it is one of the most critical choices that two people make. The good thing is that in Christ, we have access to God’s throne of grace, as written in (Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16), before which we can ask and pray for clarity.

One of the purposes of the dating stage is to seek clarity before getting into the lifetime commitment of marriage. The clear answer being sought by dating couples is simple: is it God’s will for them to get married?

It is something that dating couples pray for because marriage is a lifetime commitment. The difference in values, calling, and other things (which they would learn during courtship and dating) that need to be considered requires you to pray for clarity. For example, let’s say a man is called to go to the nations to do missions, and the woman feels she is called to stay. The conflict arises, along with the need to pray for clarity on whether it is wise to continue the relationship into marriage.

Heavenly Father, as my boyfriend/girlfriend and I continue to date, give us the clarity we need to know whether it is wise to get married, given our values and our respective callings from You. Help us seek a marriage that You would use to further Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

It is imperative to note that the Bible never encourages divorce or annulment. It is written in Mark 10:9 that what God has joined together, let no man separate.

So, cases where a spouse considers breaking off a marriage happen in dire scenarios. For example, if a woman who was already married before becoming a Christian has a husband who is so abusive that her life is in danger, breaking off the marriage is not only an option but the safest choice. Another provision in the Bible where divorce is exempted is Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9, where Jesus said that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, commits adultery. In other words, serious infidelity in marriage is a reason to allow for the consideration of divorce.

Another scenario where divorce can also be considered is if a believer has an unbelieving spouse who wants to break off their marriage due to differences in the faith, as pointed out in (But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. 1 Corinthians 7:15).

However, it is also important to note that none of this changes the fact that God hates divorce, as written in Malachi 2:16. When Jesus was talking to the Israelites in Matthew 19:8, such provisions about divorce were given not because God approved of divorce. It was because the people’s hearts were hardened. Some cheat, abuse, and do other horrible things to their spouses and children, and God doesn’t want that to occur.

Praying for clarity in these kinds of situations is complicated, given their context, but also essential.

Heavenly Father, I pray for clarity regarding my marriage. Help me make the best choice that will honor You and glorify You. Give me the wisdom I need regarding whether to keep fighting for my marriage or whether it is wiser and safer for me to break it off. Divorce is not and should not be an instant answer to a problem in any marriage; despite how dire the situation is, you should work through it. As believers, exercise the fruit of the Spirit and show grace and mercy, just as God showed us.
