How Do You Pray for Someone Special?

Everyone has that special person in their life who makes them feel like anything is possible. These people are incredibly important to us, so we should include them in our prayers.

The best way to pray for someone special is to first take time to listen to God and ask Him to reveal that person’s needs. You can also pray for spiritual growth and ask that they seek, worship, and praise God in all circumstances. Pray for their overall wellbeing, and for God’s will to be done in their lives.

However, if you’re having a hard time praying for a particular person it’s not as complicated as you think. Here are some points to consider when you want to pray for someone special:

●      Be open and honest before God.

If you want to pray for someone special, be open and honest before God. He already knows your thoughts, but he wants your heart and honesty.

If you pray for someone because you like them, tell God about it. Tell Him that this person has caught your attention and that you would like to learn more about them. However, if it is a friend who has asked you to pray for them, do so freely, without any reservations or hesitation. Make sure that your motive is pure and aligned with God’s Word. Doing so should give you confidence that God will answer your prayer [1 John 5:14-15 (NIV)].

●      Desire to know what this person needs.

Asking God to help you know what a particular person needs is a great way to begin your prayer. We must not enter into prayer with preconceived ideas of what our special someone might need. We can start by asking God what He knows about them and how best we can pray for them and then work from there.

You can’t just say, “Please let me know what this person needs,” because that’s not prayer; it’s a wish, and prayers are supposed to be more than wishes. Instead, simply ask God for His guidance so that when you pray for that someone, you are praying with purpose and intentionality, not just making guesses about their needs based on what might be helpful at that moment.

Saying prayers that are broad or general is not ideal. You should practice praying something specific, such as: “Lord, please heal this person from anxiety” or “Lord, please help this person have a productive day.”

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Spirit of God is always there, ready to guide you when you pray. He will help you discern what God wants for that person’s life that honors Him.  The Holy Spirit is the source of all truth. He will guide you and show you the way. In your prayer, ask Him to guide you and be sensitive to His small still voice that will speak directly to your heart.

If you wish to ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in praying for someone special, below is a sample prayer that can set your heart towards trusting the lead of the Holy Spirit.  If you want to pray for discernment, you could use this approach:

“Holy Spirit, lead me as I earnestly search for the truth. I want to know Your will for someone’s life and pray for the fulfillment of those people. Show me how I can recognize deception and the lies of Satan. Lead me into all truth, so that I will remain in Your will in my life.”

The Holy Spirit is the spirit of wisdom, understanding, and counsel. [John 16:13 (NIV)]. You can ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in your decisions, especially regarding the things you should pray for.

●      Keep in mind this person’s spiritual growth.

Spiritual growth involves growing in faith. Faith, however, is a gift from God [Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)]. The act of praying for someone’s faith to grow is expressing a desire that they will come to know and understand what it means to have a relationship with God—to trust Him fully, hope in His promises, and believe in His goodness, mercy, and love for us all.

The point is, a prayer for someone special to you is important because it helps them grow in faith supernaturally. When you pray for someone, you are asking God to guide them, help them make good decisions, and protect them from harm. Doing so gives that person a chance to grow closer to God and become more like Him. God may use you or other people for Him to reveal Himself to them.

It’s important to note that God is not bound by time or space; His wisdom is unfathomable. [Romans 11:33-36 (NIV)]. He can reveal himself in any way He wants—and He often chooses to do so through people. The Bible taught us that God is like a father who loves his children so much that he gives them the gifts they need, even though they aren’t always the gifts they want.

This means that when you pray for someone, God will reveal himself to them in whatever way is best for them. That might not always be exactly what you would choose for them. However, this doesn’t mean that God isn’t paying attention or that He doesn’t care about your prayers. It just means that sometimes we have to wait until the time is right before we get clear answers from him.

●      Pray to give love freely.

A prayer is a powerful tool for developing the ability to love freely. It’s easy to give something when we know we can get something in return, but it’s another thing entirely to treat someone special who doesn’t give us anything back. The best way to develop this type of love is through prayer, where we ask God for help.

Prayer can help you become more compassionate and less judgmental, making you more likely to see others as worthy of love, regardless of what they’ve done or what they have to offer you.

When you pray, you’re opening yourself up to God’s wisdom and guidance on how best to treat others. In this way, prayer can help you be more empathetic towards others and develop the ability to love freely, without expecting anything in return.

●      Be patient as you wait for an answer to your prayers.

God doesn’t always answer our prayers immediately. He has a plan for all of us, and sometimes we may struggle to understand the delay.

The Bible taught us not to worry about tomorrow—that each day will bring its own worries [Matthew 6:34 (NIV)]. When you are waiting for a response from God, think about what else you can pray for that person, instead of focusing all your energy on finding out what God has planned for that person.

Waiting is a difficult thing to do, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Sometimes, it can be frustrating, but God knows what He’s doing. And when He does answer, know that it will be precisely what we need.

●      Keep a list of your prayers in your journal.

Keeping a list of your prayers in your journal is one of the most important things you can do. This helps keep you focused and allows you to see God’s response to your efforts to pray for someone. Keeping a list of your prayers will also help you be sensitive to new ways that God is using you to touch the lives of others, as well as draw attention to areas in which God is answering your prayer requests. You will also recognize how faithful God is as He answers prayers.

The Benefits of Praying for Someone Special

Praying for someone has its benefits not only for them, but also for you. When you pray for someone special to you, there are several ways that your faith can be strengthened. Below are the two major benefits:

1.    You learn more about yourself.

As you pray for another person’s growth in faith, you will also be forced to examine your own faith. This can be an incredibly humbling experience, and one that helps us become more aware of our shortcomings as Christians. It also allows us to reflect on how we’ve been living out our faith in Jesus Christ.

2.    You learn more about how God answers prayer.

When you pray, you learn more about the character of God and how he answers prayer in different situations.

You learn what it means to trust God and how he works in our lives. You can also learn how to be a better person and how best to help others in their time of need.
