Morning Prayer For Comfort When Facing Death

While we can live a victorious and thriving life as Christians here on earth, death is always present in this world. We are already saved in Christ, but our mortal bodies are subject to physical death. However, as Christians, that is something we do not fear at all. We know that we have life in Christ. When we die physically, we are going to resurrect in Christ. That is why Jesus said in John 11:25-26 that He is the resurrection and the life. If we believe in Him, though we die, we shall live. 

Lord Jesus, thank You for dying for us on the cross. From being dead in sin, we became alive in You. In You alone, we find forgiveness and eternal life. Thank You because death is not the end for us, but only the beginning of spending eternity with You. In Your name, I pray. Amen.

What does the Bible say about comfort in death?

The fact is that even Christians, at some point, shall die. It could be from old age, being martyred for the faith, being in an accident, or many other reasons. We have to remember that, in the end, this is not our real home. Our life here on earth is only temporary. In Philippians 3:20-21, the apostle teaches us that our real citizenship is in heaven, and we await when Jesus comes again when the new earth and our new heaven shall come. 

Christ has prepared a place for us, as mentioned in (And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:3). That place, as written in (And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelation 21:4), is a perfect place where there is no more death, mourning, crying, or pain, for those things will pass away when the new earth and heaven come. Knowing that our life here is temporary is another reason we live for Christ alone. We live a crucified life. As written in Galatians 2:20, our life is not for us anymore, but for Christ.

It is the Gospel that ultimately brings us comfort when we are in a situation facing death. We know that when we die, we won’t end up dead both physically and spiritually or go to hell. Because we know that Christ has died for our sins, we are excited to meet God and be with Him in paradise. That is infinitely better than being alive here on earth. 

In short, Christ is our source of comfort when facing death, knowing that we have eternal life in Him. We are confident that we are not bound to be judged by our sins because Christ has already paid for our sins. 

How do you pray for comfort in death?

The Bible has many verses that should bring us comfort when we are facing death. That is the redemption story that God has orchestrated since Adam and Eve fell. It is about God saving us from sin and eternal death by giving up His Son, Jesus. ( For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16) says that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

With that in mind, you pray for comfort whenever facing death by simply praying to God, reminding yourself of what Christ has done for you, and thanking God for it. For example, let’s say you are a missionary in a nation that is hostile to Christianity, and it seems that you are about to pay the ultimate sacrifice for your faith. You can be comforted by reminding yourself with (Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24) that those who believe in Christ will have eternal life. You shall not come into judgment but pass from death to life. However, you can also use that verse in prayer.

Here is an example of how you can pray John 5:24 in the morning:

Father in heaven, I thank You because, in Christ, I have eternal life. In Christ, I shall never be judged for my sins, for You already judged them in Him, and I shall pass from death to life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Another Scripture that you can use is from John 11:25-26. Jesus said that He is the resurrection and the life and that those who believe in him may die, but they shall live because they have eternal life in Him. That is another comforting truth you can meditate on in prayer. 

Lord Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. I may die physically, but I shall still live spiritually and be resurrected with a glorified body. Thank You because, in You, death is never the end but only a tunnel toward a glorious eternal future with You. In Your name, I pray. Amen.

The last verse is from 1 Thessalonians 4:14, which tells us that since Jesus died and rose again, we who are also in Him shall rise again when we die. That pertains to our bodies being resurrected as glorified ones, as written in Philippians 3:21. The kind of bodies that we are talking about are perfect, not prone to any sickness or death. 

Father in heaven, I thank You because, in Christ, I shall also be resurrected. When I do, I shall have a glorified, imperishable body. More than that, I shall also spend all of eternity worshiping You and enjoying Your presence. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

If there is one critical principle regarding how we pray a morning prayer for comfort when facing death, that would be Christ, simply because He is the only one we can count on for eternal life. Apart from Christ, there is no life. Only death. That is why, if you know of people who have not yet repented and believed the finished work of Christ, you must preach the Gospel to them because eternal life can be found in Christ alone. Christ is our greatest comfort.
